A LONG HIATUS...
It's been a long time since I've done a newsletter...August 2007, to be exact. Unfortunately, during the time since then, my entire attention has been devoted to my other business, Goal Systems International. But although I haven't had time to update the Hurricane Ridge Arts web site or send out newsletters since then, I have done some lapidary and jewelry work. This month I'm showcasing some of what I've done since last fall. There will be more to come...

Bill Dettmer

A malachite and sterling silver formal necklace. Two strands of beads and silver spacers suspending a square emerald-cut Congolese malachite cabochon.
A triangular malachite and silver pendant. The stone is cut from the same piece as the Nefertiti pendant, above, but has a rounded dome, rather than facets.
Angel Tears
Variscite looks a lot like turquoise, but it's more green. And it's become somewhat rare, as the two best mines (in Utah) are largely played out. These "angel tears" are definitely "limited edition."
Remember the pink-coated licorce candy? Australian rhodonite looks like that. Here are a few free-form polished nuggets.

The stone for this large cabochon comes from Siberia, near Lake Baikal. The dark green alternates with iridescent silvery-white mica.
This 2.5" ammonite comes from Morocco. It's 165 million years old, and polished to a high shine.
This fan-shaped pendant is made of the highest quality lapis lazuli from Afghanistan. "We had to run from the airplane to the car, ducking to avoid sniper fire..." (Oops! Wrong situation!)
When I was in Australia in February, I obtained some large pieces of raw malachite and rhodonite.
In the months ahead, I'll be custom-cutting and polishing these pieces. If you have preferences for sizes or shapes of pendants or pins, now would be a good time to let me know. Watch for new items next month...
